UK parliament to debate possible sanctions against Nigerian Government, officials

The UK parliament has indicated it will be debating on the possibility to impose sanctions against the Nigerian government and officials. This decision came after a petition, which was started on the government website, gathered over 200,000 signatures.

The petition started by Silas Ojo, asked for action to be taken following the Nigerian government’s crackdown on #EndSars protesters. According to the petition, the UK government should take action “to impose sanctions on members of the Nigerian government and police force involved in any human rights abuses by the Nigerian police.”

The debate is scheduled to take place on 23rd November 2020 at the UK House of Commons.

It would be noted that while there have been significantly higher levels of human rights abuses in Cameroon over the last four years of the Anglophone crisis, there has not been such a debate in the UK parliament. This is largely because no petition started by Cameroonians or their sympathizers has received the required 100.000 signatures to trigger a debate.

Developing story…
