UK Prime Minister, Liz Truss, makes history as she resigns after 45 days in power

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, has today resigned, after being in power for just 45 days.

She announced her resignation in a statement made outside Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister.

According to Liz Truss, she was unable to fulfill the promises made when she was chosen as the Conservative Party leader, and she had informed King Charles III of her intention to quit office.

Her resignation makes her tenure the shortest for a UK prime minister.

George Canning, who served as prime minister for 119 days until passing away in 1827, has the second-shortest tenure.

Liz Truss’ problems started on September 23 when her first chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, of Ghanaian heritage, alarmed the financial markets with his mini-budget.

Since then, anxiety among Conservatives in the parliamentary party has changed into widespread fury.

Following dramatic events last night in the House of Commons over a vote on fracking, she announced her resignation today following many hours of increasing calls for her to go.

“I will continue as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen,” she added, referring to the upcoming week’s Conservative leadership contest.

This makes her the fourth British Prime Minister to resign in 6 years following the UK’s vote in 2016 to leave the European Union.
