UN demands investigation into burning of Mamfe hospital

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Cameroon has urged authorities to track and bring to book, perpetrators of the Mamfe district hospital arson.

In a June 10, 2022 release the humanitarian coordinator ad interim stressed that the act carried out by a non state armed group has left close to 100,000 people in need.

“The Mamfe district hospital is covering more than 85,000 people living in the area,” the release stated.

It added that the destruction of the facility “will deprive people of urgently needed care and further weaken the local health system.”

The attack, the UN agency went on, is the fifth against healthcare since January 2022 and one of an uncountable number since the start of the Anglophone crisis.

“Attacks on healthcare workers, patients and facilities are serious violation of international human rights law, they must be investigated and perpetrators brought to account,” the humanitarian coordinator stressed.

The coordinator further urged the conflicting parties “… To protect healthcare and refrain from hindering access to medical services.”
