UN says peace possible in Cameroon if government demonstrates will

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet has said Cameroon has the opportunity to end it’s conflict and enter an era of peace.

Lauding the latest move by President Paul Biya that had seen hundreds of prisoners released she said this could be a sign of better things to come.

“I hope that this decision taken by the government opens the door to long term constructive dialogue that enables Cameroon to tackle the root causes and underlying grievances” she said.

During her visit to Cameroon in May this year, she had revealed that she and President Biya spoke on a range of issues, agreeing that “national dialogue and reconciliation were essential”.

Bachelet further urged political parties, and militant groups to work with the authorities to seek a lasting solution to the crisis.

“Cameroon has the opportunity to leave behind years of conflict and confrontation and enter a new era of peace and prosperity where human rights are respected and protected” she stated.

Despite several challenges, the UN rights body she assured will do everything in it’s power to see that peace returns.

“If the will to find solutions remains strong and if the government abides by it’s commitments, the country as a whole could and should benefit substantially” she added.

Bachelet’s word come as one of several other calls for a genuine dialogue and a return to peace in the Anglophone regions of the country. Despite proposing that the regions be given a special status during the national dialogue, secessionists and some Federalists say it’s not enough and does not show the government’s willingness to resolve the crisis.
