The National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP) has denounced what it terms a smear campaign against its candidate, Bello Bouba Maigari, by individuals it describes as “attention seekers.”
According to the party, a man named Augustin Nguefack made “false” claims about Bello Bouba Maigari during a program on Equinox TV on Thursday, September 25.
In an attempt to differentiate between Bello Bouba and another presidential candidate, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Mr Nguefack allegedly stated that Bello is still partially aligned with the Biya regime and partially with UNDP militants.
The UNDP considers these statements a campaign to discredit its candidate.
“Augustin Nguefack made a false statement designed to manipulate public opinion,” said the UNDP in a statement.
“The goal is to discredit the UNDP candidate, Bello Bouba Maigari, a credible statesman with the ideal profile to turn Cameroon around.”
The party asserted that Augustin Nguefack, lacking any substantive arguments, resorted to smearing Bello Bouba Maigari.
“Lying is the preferred weapon of those lacking arguments and inspiration,” the statement continued.
It expressed confidence that the Cameroonian people, who are aware of the record of statesman Bello Bouba Maigari—a man who has served his country his entire life with loyalty and fidelity—will not be fooled by “illusion-mongers seeking visibility in an election in which they have no relevant role to play.”
The UNDP stated it is very confident that Cameroonians will vote for Bello Bouba Maigari in the upcoming presidential election.
