A student of level 100, Faculty of Science of the University of Bamenda, called Asizil Leslie has committed suicide by hanging.

The Incident occurred on Tuesday, July 25th, 2023 at Ntanebieh Quarter, Mile 90 Bambili in Tubah Subdivision of the North West Region.

A neighbor is reported to have found the student in the morning hanging on a rope behind the house at 6 am on Tuesday, July 25th.

Reports say before the shocking incident, Leslie had complained of facing financial difficulties.

One of his friends told MMI that, “Leslie lastly chatted with me at about 5 am, telling me he was having financial problems. When I asked him what his financial problems were? he told me the money the parents sent him to settle house rents and use the balance for transportation back to the village has been lost in betting (1XBET).”

‘1XBET’ is a betting platform. The platform resonates amongst a majority of young people who have taken it as a source of lively hood.

According to information MMI is privy to, Leslie’s uncle sent him 30,000frs thereafter and he still invested in the gambling scheme which never materialized.

“He told me after that his uncle has sent him 30,000frs and he has still used it for betting and it’s gone. That’s all we chatted and only to hear this morning that he has committed suicide,” his classmate told MMI.

Local administrative authorities visited the scene of the incident to get full knowledge of what happened.

The corpse of the student at the time of this report was taken to Awing village in Santa Subdivision of the North West, where he comes from, for burial “after traditional rites were performed on the corpse by the Bambili village secret society ( Ngumba), permitting its evacuation from the site of the incident.”

It should be noted that this is not the first time a student of that institution taking away his own life.

In July last 2022, a female student of the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the University of Bamenda who hailed from Bambui village also committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance after the mother forced her to marry a man which was not her choice.
