University of Buea to Launch Sexual Harassment Probe

Plans are afoot at the University of Buea to open an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment by members of staff.

In a notice to staff and students of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, the University’s Registrar, Ernest L. Molua says anyone who has been a victim in the last five years should drop a written complaint.

He says it should be accompanied by “supporting evidence.”

The latest move comes after reports of sexual misconduct by former students and staff of the institution.

On May 6 2020, the International Federation of Women’s Lawyers, FIDA had called on the University administration to see that justice was served.

Acknowledging receipt of the letter that was signed by FIDA National President, Gladys Mbuya, UB’s Vice Chancellor, Ngomo Horace Manga told The Sun newspaper the university first has to investigate before involving judicial authorities.

“I received a complaint but it was delivered to me on hand here by two female and two male lecturers from JMC.”

Caution he says must be taken. “We didn’t want a situation where the university makes a fool of itself … The university has its own laid down procedure” he said.

The University of Buea is not new to such controversy. The institution is yet to openly declare it is carrying out an investigation into the FIDA complaint.
