Burkina Faso’s Minister of Defence, General Aime Barthelemy Simpore has announced that 10 soldiers and five civilians had been arrested in connection with the plot to overthrow the government of Roch Marc Kabore.
Gunfire was heard near the home of Burkina Faso’s president after soldiers staged mutinies denouncing poor working conditions, corruption, the sacking of the country’s military top brass, and more resources for the battle against Islamist insurgents.
Authorities declared an overnight curfew from 8 pm on Sunday “until further notice” and the education ministry said schools would be closed this Monday and Tuesday across the country.
Military governments are already in power in Mali, Guinea, Chad, and Sudan following four coup d’états in the last year.
