The U.S. assistant secretary of state for Africa has said a lasting solution could be provided to the ongoing armed conflict in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon if the crisis is handled at the international level.
“Perhaps it’s time to take the deadly separatist crisis in Cameroon to an international forum” Tibor Nagy said.
His reaction is coming after series of domestic and international calls for peace, yielded no fruit.
The top United States diplomat to Africa maintained that an inclusive dialogue remains the ultimate way out of the crisis.
Tibor Nagy called for an open, unlimited national dialogue, as way out of the unrest in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.
He expressed worries over the increasing humanitarian impact of the crisis. Tibor Nagy told reporters on Tuesday, March 12th, 2019 that, “my heart breaks for Cameroon … I just don’t understand why this crisis goes on and on and on.”
Cameroon’s communication minister had in a strongly worded statement days back criticized Nagy’s earlier comments on the Anglophone crisis, accusing him of misunderstanding the situation and interfering in the West African country’s internal affairs.
Rene Emmanuel Sadi said the government of Cameroon has taken necessary measures to put an end to the Anglophone crisis.
The Anglophone crisis has continued to escalate with close to a million persons displaced, thousands of lives lost and hundreds of thousands of kids unable to go to school.
While hundreds of schools have remained closed down since 2016 in the affected regions, at least 70 schools have been attacked.
Opinion holders believe that the situation might get worst in the coming months if the crisis is not resolved.
