Victoria United tops Elite One Play-offs after beating Coton Sport 2-1

Victoria United (Opopo) now tops the Elite One Play-Offs following its 2-1 win over Cotton Sport of Garoua at the Mbappe Leppe Stadium in Douala this evening.

The Limbe-based side now has 12 points, surpassing 2 points from Yong Sports Academy of Bamenda, who were previously leading the playoffs.

Victoria United took the lead of the game at the 22nd minute when top goal scorer Nji Richmond channeled a timely cross into the net.

The team maintained dominance in the first half and had another breakthrough at the 36th minute when their youngest player, 17-year-old Wilfred Nathan Doualla, broke through two Cotton Sports defenders to net the second goal.

The 2-0 lead was long-lasting and was only broken by Coton Sport in the 81st minute when it seized the advantage of a defence lapse.

The last 15 minutes saw Coton Sport mounting huge pressure on OPOPO, which retreated to playing on the defence.

The Limbe-based side however missed several goal-scoring chances in the second half, leaving the scores at 2-1.

That was the third meeting for Victoria United, popularly called OPOPO, and Coton Sport, with Coton Sport winning one and drawing one in two previous meetings.

Prior to today’s game, defending Elite One Champions Coton Sport took to its Facebook page to express its determination to retain its title and particularly to win OPOPO.

Both teams had 9 points each at the playoffs but Victoria United is clearly topping the table now after Yong Sport Academy lost 0-1 to Canon of Yaoundé.

Victoria United are on the verge of becoming champions of the Elite One and this would come true if they win their last game for the season against Stade Renard of Melong.
