Viral Bali Video: CHRDA Condemns Torture And Calls For Restrain

Reactions continue to stream in following the viral video from Bali in the North West region of Cameroon in which women are mishandled by armed separatists.

Reacting to the ill treatment of the three women and babies, the Center For Human Rights and Democracy in Africa CHRDA says causing pain and suffering, especially on women and children does not only constitute Gender Based Violence, but is outrightly against international law and the values it defends.

The CHRDA said the five (5) men armed with assault type weapons, sticks and cables
accused the women in Mungaka, a language spoken in Bali Nyonga of the North-West Region of spying on them, “an allegation denied by the women while in agony to be untrue.”

Agbor Balla’s CHRDA says any form of repression or persecution targeting civilians in a situation of armed conflict constitute a grave breach of international Humanitarian law and international human rights. Reiterating that:

“the convention against Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading Treatment or punishment (the torture Convention 1984) as well as the convention on elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and the convention on the right of the child condemns such torture and violence against women and children.”

The human right organization qualifies the punishment metted on women in the video as barbaric.

CDHRA also called on the state to put in place conditions that protect women and children considered as most vulnerable in the crisis situation and to “investigate such human rights abuses.”
