Vision 4 TV risks NCC sanction for accommodating hate speech

The National Communication Council, NCC, has warned Vision 4 television in Yaounde for ‘promulgating’ hate speech.

This was in reaction to the controversy aroused by a recent interview with Prof Claude Abe on one of the television’s programs, “Club d’Elite”.

The NCC announced that it has sent a warning to the TV station because it allowed Prof Abe to make hate speech remarks during the program hosted by Vision 4 manager, Bruno Bidjang, Sunday, April 16.

In an interview with CRTV, the NCC President, Joe Chebonkeng, said that the body has summoned Bruno Bidjang for a hearing on the hate speech remarks. “After the hearing, we will take the necessary measures,” said Joe Chebonkeng.

In a statement released at the weekend, Cameroon Human Rights Commission, CHRC, also condemned the hate speech remarks on Vision 4, calling for accountability from public figures and journalists.

Part of the remarks Prof Abe made on Vision 4, which the NCC labeled as hate speech, stated thus: “The Republic will have to go through land reform. Everyone will have to go home. We must not remain on this principle of the Republic to invade people in their villages.”
