Wabane authorities use football to preach school resumption gospel

Youths of Wabane, a subdivision in Lebialem, South West region of Cameroon have for the first time in years had a successful sporting event.

Youths of one of the divisions most hit by the Anglophone crisis just ended what was dubbed the Mayor’s football cup.

Plagued by gun battles between separatist fighters and soldiers, residents of Wabane had been confined to their homes and others forced to flee into the bushes for safety.

The tournament which was the first of its kind since 2016 when the crisis started served as an avenue for locals to find common ground and relax after years of tensions.

The competition finale was played in Mmouck-leteh at the GTC Ntemnzem stadium with hundreds of locals serving as spectators.

Marita FC, one of the finalists eventually beat her counterpart, Mve FC three goals to two.

The tournament was however more than just football or another recreational activity. At the end of the game, Wabane deputy Mayor, Nangkeng Richard and other authorities present reiterated the need for schools to resume in the community come October 5th.

The council official also promised to hand over books and other learning materials to boost students morales as well as encourage them to turn out massively.

While peace is yet to return to the locality completely, it is hoped that the warring parties will give school a chance by creating a favourable atmosphere for students.
