“We need his freedom” Calls multiply for the release of Mobile Money Agent detained for two weeks in Ndu

Family, friends, and loved ones of Israel Giyo, a mobile money agent in Ndu, Cameroon’s North West Region are pressing for his release.

Israel, MMI has gathered, was picked up by the forces of law and order on October 6, 2022, and taken to the Ndu gendarmerie Station where he is still being held.

The vendor is “accused of receiving money from the USA and giving to separatist fighters,” a source revealed.

Persons who know Israel have, however, described his arrest and detention as “fishy”.

“He supplies mobile money agents across the entire town of Ndu and has no control over what any sub-agent does with his/her transactions,” said one of the Ndu residents calling for his release.

It is also feared that he is being held in unfavorable conditions, given that detention facilities in Cameroon have generally been described by rights organizations as being in very poor conditions.

Israel is one of many youths detained in relation to the Anglophone crisis over the past six years.

Most of them have remained in detention and very few have been given the chance to have their day in court.
