Woman publicly tortured in Donga Mantung over witchcraft allegations

A video has been making rounds on social media platforms depicting an unnamed old woman being tortured by a crowd. According to commentary within the video the woman is accused of practicing witchcraft. Many North West traditions hold that if such allegations are proven, the accused will be ostracised from the village.

Contrary to the rules of these traditions however, this woman was not expelled from the village. She was tortured and humiliated in public by members of the Nwerong secret society charged with dealing with such cases.

Forced to sit on the ground and beaten with whips while being asked to confess and name her collaborators, the woman is one of the latest victims of mob justice.

Many social media users have expressed dismay at the ill-treatment of the old woman. According to some who recognise the locality, the act took place in Njap, a village, in Donga Mantung division of the North West Region of Cameroon.

It remains uncertain what became of the woman.
