Workers Cry Foul as National Institute of Statistics and World Bank Stall on Payments

Some Cameroonians have cried foul against the continuous retention of their money by the National Institute of Statistics, some months after their contract with them ended.

Affected workers told Mimi Mefo Info they had been contracted by the NIS, in association with the World Bank, for a project normally carried out within 5 months.

A worker told us that they were trained for a duration of 21 days by the NIS, after which they signed a 2 months contract.

Following the end of their contracts with the NIS, they are yet to be paid, and the company has said nothing in this regard despite the excessive pressure and complaints sent to them.

“With all the risk some of us took especially those working in the war zone, till date the Wold Bank has not paid our salaries,” a worker lamented.

Some of the workers are also of the opinion that the money has been disbursed by the World Bank but is being held by the NIS. One of them said, “We know the World Bank has paid in the money, but it is being used by the NIS to make more money for themselves.”

The frustrated workers also say they have been left financially handicapped by this situation, as they have responsibilities and people looking up to them. “We have mouths to feed, our families are expectant. This is November, and we have nothing to take care of ourselves and our families. We are really desperate now” one of the cried out.
