World Sight Day 2023: What is the situation in Cameroon?

Today is World Sight Day, a day to raise global awareness about the importance of eye health and vision care. The theme of this year’s campaign is “Love Your Eyes at Work,” with a focus on the importance of regular eye testing and the prevention of sight issues.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 2.2 billion people worldwide have a vision impairment. The WHO further states that at least 1 billion of them have preventable vision loss. This includes conditions such as uncorrected refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism), cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Early detection and treatment of vision problems are essential to preventing blindness and other serious eye conditions. Regular eye testing is especially important for people at high risk, such as those with a family history of eye disease, older adults, and people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.

Here are some tips for preventing sight issues:

-Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
-Maintain a healthy weight.
-Exercise regularly.
-Wear protective eyewear when playing sports, working with hazardous materials, or using UV light.
-Avoid smoking.
-Get regular eye exams, even if you have no vision problems.

In addition to regular eye testing and prevention, there are a number of other things you can do to keep your eyes healthy, such as:

-Get enough sleep.
-Take breaks from computer screens and other digital devices.
-Use artificial tears if your eyes feel dry.
-Avoid rubbing your eyes.
-Protect your eyes from the sun by wearing sunglasses and a hat.

World Sight Day in the Workplace

This year’s World Sight Day campaign also highlights the importance of eye care in the workplace. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), more than 13 million people worldwide live with vision impairment related to their work, and an estimated 3.5 million eye injuries occur in the workplace annually.

Employers can play an important role in promoting eye health and safety in the workplace by:

-Conducting regular eye screenings for employees.
-Providing employees with access to quality eye care.
-Educating employees about eye health and safety risks
-Providing employees with appropriate protective eyewear.

For workers using the computer, it is advisable to always lift their eyes away from the computer from time to time for at least 20 minutes to focus on something else.

By taking these steps, employers can help protect their employees’ vision and ensure a safe and productive workplace.

The situation in Cameroon

Statistics show 70% of Cameroonians use African traditional medicine when faced with eye defects. Authorities hold that this explains why data collection is challenging. They further note that the exact number of those suffering from visual impairment is far higher as a result.

Some surveys have, however, been able to present the situation in some parts of Cameroon.
