Yaoundé central prison: Maddening Black Maria driver jolts Anglophone detainees wounding at least eight

At least eight Anglophones detained at the Yaoundé central prison in connection with the situation in the North West and South West Regions are licking their wounds after a maddening prison van driver jolted them.

The detainees were returning from the Yaoundé military court this Friday, 18 December 2020 when the incident happened.

“The prisoners got angry after their matter was adjourned again to January. They entered the truck and were singing freedom songs and dancing in the truck,” a dependable source told Mimi Mefo Info but did not want to be named given that they were not authorized to talk.

The prison guard who was on the wheels, apparently vexed by the singing of the detainees, accelerated the truck before stopping abruptly. The driver carried out the abrupt rough or violent movement four times.

“…The driver then took on high speed and automatically applied the brakes. He did so four times, throwing the prisoners in various directions in the truck. The jolting was so intense that the hand-cuffed detainees hit themselves against the metal walls of the truck, sustaining varying degrees of injury,” said our source.

Upon arriving at the Yaoundé central prison, the driver escaped before the situation was brought to the attention of the prison superintendent.

Mimi Mefo Info understands that the wounded detainees have received first aid care at the prison’s infirmary. Nevertheless, they have been unable to buy the medicines prescribed by the prison’s medical doctor.
