Gendarme officers in Yaounde have arrested two men in possession of 500 grams of cocaine and a large stock of cannabis during an operation on Saturday, March 18.
The officers first apprehended an 18-year-old at about 4pm at a place called Echangeur Brique in Yaounde, from whom they seized 500 grams of cocaine.
He then led the officers to Manguiers neighbourhood where they arrested a “major drug dealer” at about 7pm.
“A large stock of cannabis, 500 grams of cocaine and a sum of 180,000 CFA Francs, representing the proceeds gained through the sale of drugs within few hours, were recovered from the alleged drug dealer during his arrest,” the Gendarmerie said on its Facebook page.
“The vehicle he used as a sales counter and as a means of transport for his numerous supplies was also seized. The suspect, who is also an ex-convict, confessed to his crime and reported that he mainly purchased his drugs at the Briqueterie neighbourhood. It was also found that his most important group of buyers were in schools, which he frequented using his black Yaris vehicle with which clients were well acquainted.”
The Government of Cameroon has been intensifying efforts to stamp out drug abuse and trafficking.
In his end of year speech in December, President Biya cautioned youths against abusing drugs, a phenomenon he said was rife in the country.
