Yaoundé V mayor, Augustin Balla has come under scathing criticism after elements of his council police brutalised pressmen yesterday.
Bertrand Tsasse, pressman of Canal 2 in Yaoundé was beaten up by the security elements of the council during an exchange with commercial bike riders.
The municipal policemen, reports say, accused Bertrand and his colleagues of having incited the bike riders to engage in a brawl with them.
Sources have however denied the allegations, stating that the act was done out of pure malice.
“The journalists are falsely accused of inciting the strike action of the bike riders,” MMI is told.
The municipal police as well as the council mayor have remained silent over the incident.
The incident it should be recalled, happened a few days to the International Day for Press Freedom.
