Yaoundé: traders lament over demolition of shops at Marché Madagascar

A good number of traders are enraged following demolition of shops at the Madagascar Market in Yaoundé, Center Region of Cameroon.

The demolitions were carried out by the Yaounde II council on Thursday, September 22, 2022.

“I am currently speechless, my shop has been brought down to nothing, I am speechless,” lamented a trader.

The demolitions carried out with the help of a huge caterpillar machine met fierce resistance from some traders of the Madagascar Market.

According to this meat seller, who equally happened to be a victim of the demolitions, “they have brought down the whole market. I don’t know where to sell again. Where will I take my meat to?”

However, according to the Yaounde II council, the demolitions are in line with its campaign aimed at combating insalubrity in the municipality.

They equally indicated that a warning had been passed over a year ago, informing the traders of the demolitions.

Despite the allocation of a space by the Yaounde II council for these traders to resume the businesses, the latter insist the space is insufficient to contain them.
