Yoshihide Suga Succeeds Shinzo Abe As Japan’s PM

Yoshihide Suga has been elected Japan’s new Prime Minister in replacement of Shinzo Abe, who resigned following health constraints.

The 71-year-old Suga, son of a strawberry farmer, was voted by the country’s lower house of parliament this Wednesday.

This was after he won two-thirds majority vote in the leadership contest of Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Monday.

The new PM takes over the world’s third-largest economy at a time when the country is battling with economic stagnation caused by the Coronavirus.

The country has been hard hit by the pandemic as it harbours the world’s most elderly population.
The new Prime Minister “is expected to push forward with his own initiatives, including bureaucratic reform, digitalisation, and helping Japan’s rural communities through policies on agriculture and tourism,” says Al Jazeera.
