Young Cameroonian journalist wins prestigious RFI Award

Charles Abessolo from Cameroon (CRTV) and a technician from Burkina Faso, Romain Bouda were yesterday awarded the Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon scholarship.

The prize given yesterday was the seventh edition of its kind and it is an award given out by RFI in tribute to their reporters that were murdered in 2013 in Kidal, Mali.

It is an annual award given to one outstanding young journalist from the continent as well as a radio technician. Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, it became impossible for the award ceremony to be performed as in the past years where the 10 finalist from different nations are brought together in one country.

The barrier measures put in place in various countries meant this time that the winners had to follow the award ceremony from an online platform.

The organizers of the award explained that the award winners were chosen at the end of a three weeks meticulous distance learning and evaluation in order to arrive at the winner, from a list of 10 journalists and 10 technicians from 10, African countries.

Having gone this far, Cameroon remains the only country to have had 2 finalists from the list of winners.
