A fire outbreak has claimed the lives of 11 newborn babies in Tivaouane, Dakar, Senegal on Wednesday May 25, 2022.
The fire reportedly raged through the neonatal unit of the Male Abdou Aziz St Dabakh Hospital, where the 11 newborn babies were found.
According to reports, the country’s president, Macky Sall was on a state visit to Angola at the time the incident occurred.
He expressed his grief vis-à-vis the incident in a tweet which said” I have just learned with pain and consternation, the death of 11 newborn babies in the fire that occurred in the neonatology department of the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh hospital in Tivaouane. To their mothers and their families, I express my deepest sympathy.”
Senegal’s minister of health, Abdoulaye Diouf revealed that the outbreak might have been a result of an electric short circuit.
” When we heard about it, we called the management to find out what happened. We were told that there was a short circuit in the department.” said Abdoulaye.
Investigations are however being carried out to determine the real cause of the fire outbreak.
