Some 26 suspected drug dealers are set to stand trial in Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital, in connection with a drug trafficking case.

They were arrested during a recent crackdown led by the Douala 1 Gendarmerie Company in the Shell New Bell neighbourhood.

The Gendarmerie said the operation successfully dismantled a major drug trafficking and consumption ring.

“A large quantity of dangerous psychotropic substances, including ‘Thai, rocks and cannabis seeds’, was seized by Gendarmes. A sum of 351,000 CFA francs, computers and cell phones were found at a drug dealer’s home who is on the run,” it stated.

In addition to the drugs and cash, five undocumented motorbikes were also seized during the raid.

The Gendarmerie further revealed that one of the 26 arrested suspects is an illegal expatriate.

Investigations are ongoing at the Douala 1 Gendarmerie Company Headquarters.

Mixed Reactions

The public have reacted with mixed feelings following the suspects’ presentation.

Some have expressed scepticism about the impact of such arrests, questioning whether the suspects would soon return to the streets.

“The problem is not apprehending them but what justice will do with them,” commented Hamiedo Haman.

Others, however, see the arrests as a step in the right direction and commend the authorities for the effort.

The growing abuse of drugs in Cameroon remains a pressing concern, with many citizens accusing officials of not doing enough to curb the illegal trade.
