Bamenda, the bustling capital of Cameroon’s northwest region, finds itself in the grip of a digital blackout as internet users grapple with the absence of MTN network connectivity.

Reports of the network outage surfaced on Sunday, June 2, 2024, plunging the city into days of connectivity woes that only seem to worsen with each passing day.

“It’s been impossible to get online. For two days now, I’ve struggled to even load a webpage using the MTN network,” lamented Linda, one of the many affected internet users who spoke to MMI.

Initial disbelief gave way to collective frustration as more individuals realised they were facing the same issue. “I initially thought it was my phone acting up, but it turns out everyone is experiencing this,” shared another exasperated user.

The disruption has had tangible consequences for businesses and individuals reliant on MTN for internet access. Nfor, a data manager at a local health facility, bemoaned the setback: “I’m already behind schedule on updating crucial data for my institution. This internet situation is truly disheartening.”

Similarly, Noela, an online trader specialising in clothing and footwear, expressed her woes: “I rely on social media platforms to showcase my products. Without internet access, I’m at a standstill.”

In response to mounting complaints, MTN issued a statement apologising for the disruption. However, users remain in the dark regarding the specifics of the issue, with only a vague message circulated on Monday afternoon offering limited insight.

“Dear Customer, following an incident on the optical fibre provided to us, data and voice service are temporarily degraded. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” read the widely circulated message from MTN.

With the situation showing no signs of improvement, frustrated users are exploring alternative network options. “I can’t wait indefinitely. I had to switch to a different provider this morning, although the service isn’t ideal either,” remarked another disillusioned user.

This recent episode adds to a string of concerns regarding the declining quality of MTN services, including poor network performance and controversies surrounding its Mobile Money services. As Bamenda residents grapple with the ongoing disruption, questions linger about when normalcy will be restored in the city’s digital landscape.
