In 2011, Vanessa Tchatchou experienced one of the most heart-wrenching tragedies a mother can imagine: the abduction of her child shortly after birth at the gynaecological hospital in Ngousso, Yaoundé. At just 17 years old, this high school student from a disadvantaged background saw her life turned upside down when her baby girl mysteriously disappeared between the delivery room and the incubator where she was supposed to be placed. Convinced that she was a victim of a child trafficking network, Vanessa did not give up. Her fight to find her child and seek justice not only marked her life but also resonated throughout Cameroon.
With unwavering determination, Vanessa Tchatchou took her case to the public prosecutor. However, the case quickly encountered insurmountable obstacles due to the influential individuals involved in the abduction. The political turn of events, highlighted by the intervention of Issa Tchiroma, then Minister of Communication, who declared that the child had died, seemed to seal the fate of this quest for truth. In February 2012, Vincent-Sosthène Fouda, an activist supporting Vanessa, was even taken into custody after participating in a demonstration in her favor.
Despite these challenges, Vanessa Tchatchou never gave up. Driven by a fervent desire to seek justice not only for her child but also for all the underprivileged and marginalized, she decided to fight on a new front: the law. Immersing herself in her studies with exemplary determination, Vanessa earned a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Dschang. But she didn’t stop there. With relentless resilience, she recently passed the entrance exam to the Cameroon Bar, thus achieving her dream of becoming a lawyer at the age of 30.
This inspiring journey demonstrates the power of determination and hard work. Vanessa Tchatchou has not only transformed her own life; she has become a symbol of hope and resistance for many. As a lawyer, she is now ready to defend the rights of the oppressed and fight against injustices, carrying the story of her stolen child as a banner of justice.
