Residents of Quarter 1 in Muea, Buea, have taken development into their own hands through organised community labour.
This Monday, June 24, the community woke up to a concerted effort aimed at opening up the area’s waterways in anticipation of the intensifying rainy season.
Led by the Quarter Head and members of the Quarter Council, this initiative is not a one-time effort but a regular occurrence.
The residents engage in community labour once every two weeks, addressing various local development needs.
These efforts include cleaning up uncollected garbage, clearing bushy footpaths, and ensuring that waterways are unobstructed to prevent flooding.
Participation in these community labour sessions is obligatory. Those who fail to participate face a fine of FCFA 1,000 or are summoned by the Quarter Head for questioning.
This system of accountability ensures that all residents contribute to the upkeep and improvement of their community.
This community of Muea is among many in Cameroon that use group labour to resolve local development problems.
