Opposition MP and leader of the Front for Change in Cameroon, (FCC), political party, Jean Michel Nintcheu, has called on the President of Cameroon, Paul Biya, to resign.
The Member of Parliament for Wouri East made the call in an interview granted Jeune Afrique Magazine during a recent visit to France.
Paul Biya, 91, has presided over Cameroon since 1982 and shows no intention of relinquishing power.
Nintcheu, who has been a staunch critic of the regime, alleged that President Biya has violated the Constitution and should resign.
“The Head of State, guarantor of the Constitution, finds himself in an extremely serious situation when he violates the fundamental law that he is supposed to defend,” he said.
Accumulation of functions, which he accused President Biya of, is a violation of the Constitution.
“Article 7-4 of the said fundamental law unambiguously states that the office of President of the Republic is incompatible with any other elective office or professional activity. However, Paul Biya continues to lead his party, the CPDM, of which he is the national president,” Nintcheu said.
Qualifying it as a clear violation of the Constitution, he called the President to relinquish power.
“We therefore ask the president to resign, either from his duties as president of the CPDM or from his duties as President of the Republic,” he stated.
Cognizant of imminent presidential elections next year, he added, “We are ready to take action to disqualify Paul Biya’s candidacy.”
In May this year, Nintcheu filed a law suit at the Mfoundi Court of First Instance against President Paul Biya for abandoning his duties to the Secretary General of the Presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh.
The case has never been heard.
It should be noted that Nintcheu is a former militant of the Social Democratic Front party, SDF.
He served the party as Regional Chairman for Littoral until 2023 when he was dismissed alongside several others.
Though having formed another political party where he is the national leader, he has since endorsed Maurice Kamto as presidential candidate for the 2025 elections.
