Serge Espoir Matomba, the President of the United People for Social Renovation (PURS), has emerged from a period of relative silence as the 2025 presidential election draws near.

Matomba, who finished fifth in the 2018 election where President Paul Biya secured 71.28 percent of the vote, has recently started making public appearances and reconnecting with the electorate.

After a lengthy hiatus, Matomba is currently in Maroua, engaging with young people in the region through debates focused on social and economic development.

These discussions are part of a broader initiative aimed at fostering dialogue on how to improve conditions across Cameroon.

In addition to these debates, Matomba is actively encouraging his supporters to enroll in the electoral register, which closes at the end of August.

Matomba has announced that his debate tour will extend beyond Maroua, covering the entire national territory.

He also plans to reach out to the Cameroonian diaspora, with the tour expected to conclude in February 2025.

Since his debut as a presidential candidate in 2018, Matomba has maintained a low profile, especially compared to other opposition leaders such as Maurice Kamto, Cabral Libii, and Joshua Osih, who have been more vocal on social media and other platforms.

Despite his reappearance on the political scene, Matomba has not yet announced whether he will run in the upcoming election.
