Lagos, Nigeria – The family of celebrated Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu will be laying her to rest on Friday, August 30, in Lagos. Onyeka, who was also a songwriter, actor, journalist, activist, and politician, passed away on July 31st at the age of 72.
The funeral service is currently being held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, with a private burial to follow at a vault in Ikoyi.
President Bola Tinubu extended his profound condolences to the family of the late Ms. Onyeka Onwenu. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, on Wednesday, the president remembered the many artistic contributions of the late musical icon in promoting public good.
“President Tinubu celebrates the life of the versatile and extremely gifted artiste who applied herself to the whole gamut of artistic enterprise and expression, bringing joy and laughter to many. The President condoles with the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and the numerous fans of the departed star over this immeasurable loss,” the statement read.
Onyeka Onwenu, known as the “Elegant Stallion,” was not only a gifted musician with numerous hits but also a broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist. She is survived by her two sons.
The nation mourns the loss of a true icon whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
