Philemon Yang, the Cameroonian former Prime Minister and President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, delivered a powerful message to world leaders at the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York. Yang emphasised the weight of responsibility they carry, urging urgent collective action to address the world’s most pressing issues.

“We are at a crossroads of transformation, facing unprecedented challenges that demand urgent collective action,” Yang stated, highlighting the global impact of conflict, climate change, and the digital divide. He called for a united approach to develop long-lasting solutions to these growing problems.

Opportunities Amidst the Challenges

Despite these formidable challenges, Philemon Yang offered a message of hope: “There is hope because challenges come along with opportunities. The opportunity for renewal, innovation, and global cooperation is within reach.” He commended the world leaders for their efforts to adopt a “Pact for the Summit of the Future,” an initiative introduced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to implement transformative reforms.

21st-Century Problems Require 21st-Century Solutions

UN Secretary-General Guterres addressed the Assembly, expressing the urgency of addressing 21st-century challenges. “Conflicts are raging and multiplying, from the Middle East to Ukraine and Sudan, with no end in sight. Our collective security system is threatened by geopolitical divides, nuclear posturing, and the development of new weapons and theatres of war,” Guterres warned. He also underscored the crippling debt burden on developing countries and the persistent global inequalities hampering sustainable development.

The Secretary-General called for deep reforms to global institutions, noting that the UN’s current frameworks no longer reflect the realities of today’s global economy. He proposed that the Summit of the Future serve as a platform for comprehensive reforms, including overhauling the UN Security Council to better represent under-represented regions such as Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.

Paving the Way for a Peaceful Global Order

Echoing Guterres, Yang underscored the importance of the pact and its potential to lay the groundwork for a more just and peaceful world. “It represents our pledge not only to address the immediate crisis but to lay the foundation for a sustainable and peaceful global order for all people and nations,” Yang told the Assembly.

As global conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war, violence in the Middle East, and the challenges of poverty and climate change continue to escalate, the UN hopes that the Summit of the Future will chart a new course toward resolving these critical issues.
