A catastrophic petrol tanker explosion in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has claimed the lives of at least 153 people and left about 100 others injured. The incident occurred late on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at around 11 p.m., turning a tragic accident into a deadly inferno.
Yusuf Mohammad was operating the tanker, which had the plate number KMC 6412 F, when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed while traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State. According to eyewitnesses, the overturned petrol tanker soon attracted local residents who began scooping fuel from the scene, which ultimately led to the devastating explosion.
Witnesses Describe the Horrific Scene
“The residents were scooping fuel from the overturned tanker when the explosion occurred, sparking a massive inferno that killed 94 people on the spot,” a witness reported. The massive fire engulfed the area, leaving little chance for the victims to escape.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with the injured being transported to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for urgent medical care. The extent of the injuries remains severe, with authorities working to provide further assistance.
Authorities Issue Warnings and Condolences
DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, Police Public Relations Officer for Jigawa State, confirmed the tragedy, while the Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, extended his heartfelt condolences to the people of Majia and the entire state of Jigawa.
“The state’s commissioner of police, A.T. Abdullahi, condoles with the people of Majia town and Jigawa in general for the great loss. Avoid the scene of any petrol tanker accident, as it always results in death by fire,” the Commissioner warned.
Abdullahi also emphasised the importance of public safety, urging citizens to stay clear of fuel accident scenes to avoid such tragic incidents. Local authorities are continuing their assessment of the situation and providing support to the affected families and community.
