The wife of Mohammadou Baba, known as “Baba Axe,” a prominent drug lord in Bamenda, was freed on October 21 after being held captive for more than 48 hours by a separatist group. Baba Axe was killed on October 19, just a day after he and his wife, along with a third individual, were abducted on October 18 in Bamenda’s Old Town.

According to family sources, the abductors initially requested a ransom of 10 million FCFA, but later lowered their demand to 1 million FCFA. Nonetheless, it is still uncertain if any ransom was eventually paid for her release. “Insha’Allah, Baba Axe’s wife was finally released on October 21,” a family member shared, wishing to remain anonymous. The family has chosen not to disclose further information regarding the ransom negotiations.

Reports indicate that the third person who was with the couple successfully escaped, but additional information regarding their identity and the circumstances of their escape remains undisclosed.

The death of Baba Axe has ignited speculation across Old Town, with whispers indicating he might have been slain in an altercation with a competing drug faction. However, no official confirmation has been provided regarding the exact circumstances of his death.

The release of his wife closes a distressing chapter for the family, yet the unresolved details surrounding Baba Axe’s death and potential involvement of other criminal groups have left the community uneasy.

Meanwhile, Bamenda residents continue to express frustration over the ongoing drug trade, particularly in light of its illegal status. Despite recent violence, young people in the area continue to gather for drug use, raising concerns about law enforcement’s perceived inaction.
