The first vice president of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party (CRM), Mamadou Mota, has called for the resignation of the President of the Evangelical Church of Cameroon (EEC), Bila Mbenga Alexander.
This was after the EEC president banned pastors from making statements on the political situation of the country.
Rev Bila Mbenga Alexander, in a recent press release, prohibited EEC Pastors from making political statements that the Church’s supreme organ, the Synod, has not approved.
This position of the EEC came after one of its Pastors in Foumban, Yves Foncha, during an ecumenical service called for change in Cameroon.
According to Rev Bila Mbenga, EEC is an organized institution and pastors should respect “its discipline in matters of public communication.”
CRM Vice President’s Reaction
Reacting to the outing of the EEC president, the CRM’s vice president, Mamadou Mota, condemned the statement, calling it selfish.
“It is with sadness that I read this statement, which, far from being evangelical, seems more aligned with a personal choice focused on the preservation of individual interests,” said Mamadou Mota.
Accusing the EEC president of complicity in President Biya’s “malgovernance”, he reminded him that Jesus Christ was a revolutionary leader.
He questioned why the EEC president is preventing children of God from rising up to a regime that has been in power for more than 40 years.
“Jesus was a revolutionary of his time, and thanks to this revolution, you have the honor of participating in that revolution 2000 years later,” he noted.
He further questioned, “So why prevent the children of God who choose to support His people against a pharaonic system that has been in place for over 40 years, oppressing with your complicity a people you are called to protect from the miseries of this world?

Demand Resignation of EEC President
Apart from criticizing the EEC president, the CRM’s Mamadou Mota demanded the resignation of Rev Bila Mbenga Alexander.
He described the prohibition on political matters as a threat to EEC pastors, stating that times have changed and the church should move along.
“I believe that pastors should call for your resignation for this threat that you couldn’t even hide.” he said.
“The Church must move with the times and speak up when necessary.”
