The Bank of the Central African States (BEAC) has announced the circulation of a new series of coins, named “Type 2024”, starting from January 2, 2025. This initiative marks a significant step in the modernisation of payment methods within the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC).

Enhanced Modernization and Security

This new series, which succeeds the “Type 2020” banknotes, includes denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 500 FCFA. Reinforced security, increased environmental durability, and a distinctive design distinguish it. Furthermore, the designers crafted the coins from resistant materials and engraved them with symbols representing the integration and emergence of the CEMAC states.

“The new series of coins reflects in-depth consideration to meet the evolving needs of our populations,” stated the Governor of the BEAC.”We have paid particular attention to security, durability, and the representation of our community’s values.”

Innovations and Inclusions

Among the notable innovations, the introduction of a 200 FCFA coin also offers greater flexibility in daily transactions. Additionally, a bimetallic format has been adopted for the 50 FCFA and 100 FCFA coins, reinforcing their security and facilitating their identification.

“The 200 FCFA coin is a direct response to the needs expressed by users,” a BEAC official furthered. “It also facilitates exchanges and reduces reliance on banknotes for small transactions.”

Symbols and Representations

The design of the new coins highlights themes such as the role of women in society, environmental protection, and regional integration. These elements aim to reflect the values and aspirations of the CEMAC populations.

Transition and Adoption

The BEAC further specified that the old coin series will continue to circulate in parallel with the new ones to ensure a smooth transition. It encourages the populations to adopt these new coins and actively use them in their daily transactions.

“We call on all citizens of CEMAC to welcome this new series of coins favourably,” added the governor. “Their use will contribute to modernising our economy and strengthening our regional integration.”

This BEAC initiative is also part of a continuous effort to modernise payment methods, aiming to improve transaction efficiency and strengthen confidence in fiduciary currency within CEMAC.
