Akere Muna, opposition candidate for the presidency of Cameroon, has announced plans to tour the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Belgium, and Germany. His goal is to engage with the Cameroonian diaspora and rally support for his political movement aimed at bringing change to Cameroon.

Muna believes the diaspora has a critical role to play in the lead-up to the presidential election scheduled for October. He will be accompanied on the tour by civil society activists and senior members of his movement, the Now Movement.

Objective of the Tour

Muna aims to hold discussions on Cameroon’s future, share the vision and policies of the Union for Reconstruction, and connect with fellow Cameroonians and community leaders abroad.

“I want to win the presidency, put in place strong institutions, organize an election, ensure a smooth transition, and disappear,” he stated. Muna emphasized that he is not affiliated with any political party and has no long-term ambitions for power. He positions himself as a change-maker in a nation that has had only two presidents since independence.

Support for Opposition Coalition

Muna has expressed his support for a potential opposition coalition. During a recent statement, he said, “What about the opposition coalition? It will come. Because Cameroon deserves better than egos. And I, for one, believe in collective intelligence.”

In March, during a press briefing in Yaoundé with MMI and other media outlets, Muna remarked that it was too early to discuss coalition plans. However, he indicated that once the electoral body convenes the electorate in June, conversations about forming a coalition could advance.

During the 2018 presidential election, Muna backed Maurice Kamto just days before the vote. It remains unclear if a similar alliance will occur this year, but Muna has consistently advocated for political change and openly criticized President Paul Biya.

Akere Muna further questioned why Cameroonians continue to place their hopes in a 92-year-old leader who has been in power for over four decades.
