The Far North Region of Cameroon, often described as the “eldest daughter of the renewal,” is set to host a large-scale youth mobilisation in support of President Paul Biya. The event, scheduled for this Saturday, May 10, in the city of Maroua, is already generating tensions. It is held under the patronage of the President of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yegué Djibril.

Press Conference Outlines Mobilization Plans

In the lead-up to the demonstration, the Platform of Youth of the Far North for Emergence held a press conference on Tuesday. Mohamadou Atikou Kalda, the coordinator, led the press conference. Meanwhile, the event, hosted at a local hotel, was focused on detailing the activities planned for the day.

During the press briefing, the organisers initially referenced a mobilisation of 100,000 young participants and mentioned a support fund of 1.3 billion CFA francs for the initiative. However, they later clarified that they had not actually raised any such funds. “No funds have been mobilised for the occasion,” they stated, in an apparent effort to counter growing speculation.

Local Youth Push Back Against the March

Despite the official narrative, the initiative has triggered dissent among sections of Maroua’s youth, who view the march as politically motivated and disconnected from their daily realities.

“We hear about 1.3 billion CFA francs to support youth, but where is that money? Young people here lack opportunities, and they ask us to march to support a system that has forgotten us,” said a young unemployed graduate from Maroua.

Critics also argue that the youth are being exploited by political elites seeking to strengthen their legitimacy. Some local youth collectives are reportedly planning counter-demonstrations. “It’s a show. They mobilise young people with empty promises. We’re not fools,” said a member of a local activist group.

Organizers Reject Allegations of Manipulation

Event organisers further maintain that criticism is politically motivated and aimed at discrediting what they describe as a constructive and inclusive initiative.

“We are here for the youth and for their future. This gathering is a unique opportunity for them to benefit from concrete support,” said Mohamadou Atikou Kalda.

According to the platform, the event seeks to foster social cohesion and promote entrepreneurship among the region’s youth.

Authorities on Alert Amid Rising Tensions

As tensions rise ahead of the scheduled mobilisation, concerns are, however, growing over the possibility of clashes between supporters and opponents. Local authorities have announced that they have taken measures to ensure the event proceeds peacefully and prevent any disruptions.
