Emmanuel Jérôme Kundé, former Cameroon international and one of the nation’s most decorated footballers, has died at the age of 68. His passing on May 16, 2025, was confirmed by the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), marking the end of an era in African football history.

Career Highlights and National Impact

Born on July 15, 1956, in Ndom, French Cameroon, Emmanuel Kundé earnedcaps and scored 17 goals for the Cameroon national team from 1979 to 1992. Known for his tactical versatility, Kundé was effective both as a defender and a midfielder.

He played a pivotal role in Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations victories in 1984 and 1988. Kundé notably scored the winning penalty in the 1988 final against Nigeria. His influence extended to the global stage, where he scored a penalty in the 1990 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal against England, briefly leveling the match before Cameroon exited the tournament.

Club Career and Management

Kundé’s club career included a decade-long tenure with Canon Yaoundé, one of Cameroon’s most prominent teams. He later joined French clubs Stade Lavallois and Stade de Reims before concluding his professional playing career at Olympic Mvolyé in 1992.

After retirement, Kundé transitioned to coaching, taking charge of Canon Yaoundé, PWD Bamenda, and Gabonese side US Bitam.

Tributes and Legacy

Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroonian Football Federation, issued an official statement following Kundé’s death.

“Emmanuel Kundé was a discreet and affectionate man. His contributions on and off the field reflect the highest standards of Cameroonian football,” Eto’o said. “His name will remain associated with some of the proudest moments in our football history.”

The federation described his passing as a “significant loss” and emphasized his long-term impact on football development in Cameroon.

Global Recognition

Kundé’s performance in the 1990 World Cup, especially his confident execution of a high-stakes penalty against England, remains a historic highlight. His achievements have placed him among the most respected African footballers of his generation

While Emmanuel Kundé is no longer present to witness the continued evolution of African football, his contributions remain foundational. His leadership, skill, and sportsmanship are reflected in the success of future generations of Cameroonian players.
