In a coordinated security operation conducted between May 26 and June 8, 2025, the Nigerian Army’s 6th Division intensified efforts to combat oil theft in the Niger Delta. The Nigerian Army collaborated with other security agencies to accomplish this.

The operation led to the arrest of 43 individuals suspected of involvement in oil-related crimes. They also dismantled 27 illegal refining and bunkering sites. Authorities also seized more than 161,000 litres of petroleum products during the crackdown.

Seizures and Discoveries by State

The multi-state operation spanned several oil-rich areas, including Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Delta State. These states are frequently targeted by organised oil theft networks. In Bayelsa State, troops discovered and dismantled several illegal setups, including three unauthorized pipeline connections. Equipment found on site included five cooking furnaces, five pits used for processing, 19 large storage tanks, 36 receivers, and six metal containers. Security forces recovered more than 61,000 litres of crude oil and illegally refined diesel at these locations.

In Rivers State, the operation led to the interception of over 47,000 liters of petroleum products. Two specific substances were intercepted: Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). Security personnel seized a wooden boat and a truck that concealed and transported approximately 3,000 litres of stolen crude oil. Authorities seized more than 1,500 litres of illegally obtained petroleum products at Tamogbene and Luka Creek. Authorities confiscated heavy machinery along with over 100 industrial hoses and pipes, believed to support illicit refining activities.

Continued Security Efforts

The Nigerian Army has further stated that it remains committed to maintaining pressure on oil theft syndicates that contribute to substantial economic losses for the country. Military officials emphasised the importance of sustained joint operations with other law enforcement. They say working with other regulatory bodies to dismantle the infrastructure supporting illegal refining and petroleum smuggling in the Niger Delta is a priority. The operation reflects ongoing national efforts to protect vital oil assets and stabilise the energy sector in Nigeria’s most resource-rich region.
