President Paul Biya has maintained his new tradition of posting quotes on his social media platforms, with the latest one urging Cameroonian youth to reclaim “social and republican values”.
The quote, which is drawn from a speech Biya made in 2022, has stirred a storm of criticism and political commentary across the country’s digital space.
In the post published on his official Facebook page, 92-year-old Biya expressed concern that values such as patriotism, civic-mindedness, respect for public property, and the promotion of the general interest are “fading in the mindsets of today’s youth.”
He called on young people to renew their commitment to these principles.
The post was intended as a moral appeal to the country’s young generation, but it instead ignited widespread frustration and sarcasm, especially from political voices and ordinary citizens who see the statement as disconnected from Cameroon’s current political and social realities.
Opposition Reacts to Biya’s Call
Serge Olama of the Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation (PCRN) slammed the post, accusing the government of hypocrisy.
“Are all your corrupt ministers in Kodengui young? Leave the youth alone. They owe you nothing because you’ve done nothing for them.”
André Serge Ekorong added to the criticism, questioning the president’s growing reliance on online communication.
“Your Excellency, have you become the president of social networks? Be present on the ground to understand the real issues behind your speeches.”
Citizens Call for Action, Not Words
For many commenters, the president’s message felt like another empty speech in a country where concrete reforms remain elusive.
“Actions speak louder than words. Cameroon must no longer be the land of fine speeches. We want real change, starting with lower fuel prices,” wrote Reine Mvongo.
Oumar Idriss Diallo took a more direct jab. “What have you respected in all these years?”
Bach Kaçapa questioned the president’s grasp of his own message.
“Do you even know what the general interest is?”
Other commenters pointed to contradictions between the government’s actions and its stated values. Eric Martial Kuate asked “Who removed civic education?”
