Cameroonian teen drowns in the UK

A 17-year-old boy of Cameroonian origin has died after getting into difficulty while swimming at Pickmere Lake in Cheshire, United Kingdom, MMI News has learned from a family source. The teenager went missing on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, while swimming in the lake near Northwich, prompting a major emergency search.

Cheshire Police said officers were called at about 4:50 p.m. following reports that the boy had gone missing in the water.

Body Recovered After Major Search

Emergency services launched an extensive search operation involving police officers, a police helicopter, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, and specialist underwater search teams.

A body was recovered from the lake on Wednesday, May 27.

Cheshire Police said formal identification had not yet been completed at the time of their update, but the body was believed to be that of the missing teenager.

His family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.

Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Name Withheld Pending Official Confirmation

MMI News is not naming the teenager at this stage, pending official confirmation or consent from the family.

The loss has left the boy’s family, friends and members of the Cameroonian community in shock, as they come to terms with the death of a teenager whose life has been cut short in tragic circumstances.

Police Warn Over Open Water Dangers

The incident comes amid renewed warnings in the UK about the dangers of swimming in lakes, rivers and other open-water locations, especially during warm weather.

While open water may appear calm or inviting, authorities warn that it can hide serious risks, including sudden drops, cold water shock, strong currents, mud banks and submerged objects.

Chief Inspector Jamie Lewis of Cheshire Police described the incident as tragic and said police thoughts were with the teenager’s family, friends and everyone who knew him.

Second Young Cameroonian-Origin Life Lost in UK Waters in Two Years

The latest tragedy comes less than two years after another young man of Cameroonian origin drowned in the UK.

In June 2024, Wesley Akum-Ojong, a 19-year-old University of Oxford student who was born in Cameroon and moved to Britain as a baby, drowned after jumping into the River Thames at Port Meadow during an end-of-exams celebration.

An inquest later heard that Akum-Ojong, who studied politics, philosophy and economics at Brasenose College, had aspired to become Britain’s youngest prime minister. The coroner concluded that he drowned by accident.

His family described him as a kind, caring and helpful young man. He had studied at Watford Grammar School for Boys and was the only student from his year to gain admission to Oxford University.

The two cases are not connected, but they have renewed painful conversations around open-water safety, particularly among young people and diaspora families in the UK.

Community in Mourning

For Cameroonians in the UK and beyond, the death of another young person in open water is a painful reminder of how quickly a moment of recreation can turn into tragedy.

MMI News extends its condolences to the bereaved family, friends and the Cameroonian community affected by this loss.
