Japan’s Ambassador to Cameroon, MINAMI Kentaro, is scheduled to visit Vishi Higher Institute in Douala on Thursday, August 20, for an institutional meeting focused on higher education, youth, innovation and possible academic cooperation between Cameroon and Japan.
The Japanese Embassy’s official website identifies MINAMI Kentaro as Japan’s current ambassador to Cameroon. He took up the diplomatic assignment in late 2024 and presented a copy of his letters of credence to Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations in December that year.
According to event-planning documents reviewed by MMI News, the visit is expected to take place at the Vishi Higher Institute campus during an academic reception scheduled between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The principal diplomatic and academic session is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., although the Ambassador’s final arrival time, duration of attendance and programme remain subject to confirmation by the Embassy.
The programme is expected to include a welcome address, a presentation of the institution’s academic vision, remarks from the Ambassador and a structured dialogue between him and selected students.
Vishi Higher Institute is also expected to present a Cameroon–Japan Academic Cooperation Brief setting out possible areas of future engagement.
The institution has identified three principal areas for discussion: education and academic mobility; research, science and innovation; and cultural and international exposure.
Questions prepared for the student dialogue include the skills African students will need in the coming decades, opportunities for Cameroonians interested in studying in Japan and how institutions in both countries could develop stronger academic relationships.
The visit follows an earlier engagement between Vishi Holdings and Dara Japan.
An internal report from Vishi Holdings states that the two organisations signed a memorandum of understanding in Japan in 2025. The proposed collaboration covered hybrid training in fields including machine learning, data analysis, full-stack development and robotics.
The report also referred to plans for Japanese-language training and possible pathways connecting qualified young Cameroonians with academic and professional opportunities in Japan.
MMI News has not independently verified the present implementation status of all the initiatives contained in the 2025 report. Vishi Higher Institute is expected to clarify which programmes have begun, what remains under development and what concrete outcomes it hopes to secure from the Ambassador’s visit.
The planned reception comes amid continuing cooperation between Cameroon and Japan in education, development, technology and youth capacity-building.
