The French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs will not be visiting the restive North West and South West regions during his stay in Cameroon. The regions have been hit by conflict for three years now and we are still counting.

France has called for dialogue but critics holds Quay D’Orsay could do more to help solve the armed conflict given France’s influence over its former colonies, Cameroon being one of them.

France controls and own businesses in Cameroon, making it the largest foreign investor in the country, with approximately 33% of the stock of foreign direct investment (FDI). Cameroon is among the top fifty countries of the French FDI stock abroad. But the country’s has been adversely affected by the armed, including French businesses.

Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian however announced Thursday October 24, 2019, he will travel to Maroua, one of Cameroon’s towns hit by Boko Haram conflict. Le Drian said he will travel the the Far North Region through “a special flight”.

The agenda of his visit is still unclear to the public, but this is not the first time a top foreign official is visiting the region. His visit comes barely few weeks after the adviser to German Chancellor, Angela Merkel travelled to the region during his visit to the country.

Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian visited Cameroon to inaugurate the second bridge over River Wouri in Cameroon’s economic capital, Douala.

“I came to relaunch the cooporations between Cameroon and France as demanded by president Emmanuel Macron. I wants to reignite partnership between French Enterprises and Cameroonian Enterprises. Soon I will visit the Wouri Bridge to see the aesthetic realisation accomplished by the help of the French,” Jean-Yves Le Drian said at GICAM in Douala.
