The news of nine coronavirus cases detected in Douala spreads like wild fire Monday 23rd March 2020.

Inhabitants of the economic capital of Cameroon seems to have been reawakened to take seriously corona virus preventive measures given by the Cameroon government.

“I thought the virus was only in Yaounde but with nine cases in Douala, I think it is time to respect all preventive measures” a mobile money operator at New Bell Douala 2 says with her mask on and a bottle of sanitizer sitting on her table.

To a journalist in Douala speaking on the bases of anonymity “I am convinced that there are more cases of corona virus in Douala than what has been reported by the minister of public health. Douala is the main entry point in Cameroon by air and before the shutting down of the national borders thousands of passengers from coronavirus infected countries had entered the city. Something needs to be done and fast too to prevent the spread.”

A total of 56 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Cameroon as of Monday 23rd March according to official reports.

The minister of public health, Dr. Manaouda Malachie calls on Cameroonians to respect preventive measures.

Earlier, he said “government will not hesitate to take tougher measures to curb the spread if Cameroonians remain unconscious of the dangers of the disease.”
