Having a successor for president Paul Biya has been the talk of the day on social media in Cameroon. On Sunday, Maurice Kamto, leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party, CRM said getting a successor for Biya without revising the electoral code will not be accepted.
A recent statement of Cameroon’s renowned music artist, Charlotte Dipanda about the longterm ruler has also been animating political debates in the country.
The artist who has never been seen engaging in politics took everyone by surprise during an interview with VOA – Africa saying: “I think it is time for us to be offered something else, it is time for Cameroon to develop because when there is no alternation there is not really any development possible”.
To Charlotte Dipanda, president Biys “has come to the end of what he could offer and … he would gain from giving way to a new governance without resentment … ”
The head of state and his ruling CPDM have, however, not commented on the topic. During his last appearance in May 19th, Biya asked Cameroonians to remain cautious and not be susceptible to rumours on social media.
The 87-year old politician has been president since 1982.
