Renowned Cameroon-born lawyer, NJ Ayuk has questioned the AU commission chair’s remarks on U.S. police brutality. “Many are dying in Africa. Look at Anglophone Cameroon and your focus is to criticise Yankees,” NJ Ayuk took to twitter to question Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union.

Earlier today the AU commission chair took to social media to join other voices in condemning the violence that led to the death of George Floyd.

“On behalf of the entire African Union family, I condemn in the strongest terms the murder of George Floyd at the hands of law enforcement officers in the United States of America,” said the former Chadian foreign minister Faki.

NJ Ayuk who runs one of Africa’s most successful law conglomerates however believes the chair should focus more on African affairs.

“Americans will indict, try and if guilty, imprison these cops for their criminal behaviour. Can the African Union do same on various atrocities under your watch?” he queried.

The Spokesperson of the Chairperson of the Commission, Ebba Kalondo in a statement on behalf of the AU commission chair noted that “He further urges the authorities in the United States of America to intensify their efforts to ensure the total elimination of all forms of discrimination based on race or ethnic origin.”

This is not the first time Faki is being criticized for neglecting conflicts on the African continent. He is one of several diplomats to have visited Cameroon since the start of the Anglophone crisis that has now become an armed conflict.

Many have however criticised him for not being very straightforward on the violence in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon as his promise to act has yielded no fruits yet.
