As has always been the tradition, Biya regime henchmen roll out government intentions in the form of rumours in order to test the waters.

In fact, when Maurice Kamto hinted that he’ll not support any attempts to transfer power by tricks, he may well have been talking of the impending constitutional amendments.

Biya insiders, who refuse to be named given the sensitive nature of the information say a decor is already being set for Biya to doctor the constitution and set the stage for his exit.

For the first time in three years, the Higher Judicial Council chaired by 87-year-old President Paul Biya is expected to to meet soon.

The legal affairs department at the Presidency of the Republic is said to have concluded the draft amendments and are only waiting for President Biya to approve so it can be taken to Parliament for the rubber stamp.

Aside the reduction of presidential term limits from seven years renewal to five years renewal once, no one above 65 may be allowed to run for President.

The post of Vice President is also previewed, which will lead to sweeping changes in the government structure.
The post of Prime Minister may become obsolete.
If the above were to see the light of day, then Biya will not be candidate in any presidential election. In fact, the rumoured amendment would go to reverse some provisions of the 2008 amendments which provide that Biya could be President as long as he wants.

For now, fingers remain crossed as the Betis play their last card to conserve power as Biya’s end is now only a matter of time.
