Mobile telephones of workers of a medical non-governmental organization are in the hands of armed separatist fighters in Ngoketunjia division in the North West region of Cameroon. Workers of the NGO for security reasons have opted not to disclose the name of their NGO charged in offering primary health service.
Writing to Mimi Mefo Info on basis of anonymity, one of the workers says “We were attacked in Baba 1 village Wednesday June 17th 2020 while providing primary health care to the conflict affected communities. Non state armed groups suddenly surrounded us during a routine medical consultation in the community.”
According to our informant, villagers who are in constant need of medications tried all they could to stop the boys from harassing the humanitarian health workers to no avail.
“The people chanted songs of disapproval that they cannot allow the team to be taken away as we were commanded to follow them to their camp”.
With the intervention of the assistant of the Fon of Baba 1, the boys set free the medical workers but confiscated all theır phones.
According to one of the workers of the NGO, “We come to the community, treat their people for free, and donate medical items and delivery kits to the sick and pregnant women only to be treated by the same fighters who claim to be protecting their own people”
The attack on humanitarian workers in Ngoketunjia division comes days after separatist fighter released video interviewing workers of the United Nations to testify that they don’t disturb humanitarian workers in the division.
