Cameroon’s Chief of Defense Staff, Lieutenant General Rene Claude Meka has saluted the actions of soldiers in the country’s North West and South West regions.

The army official was speaking in Bamenda after chairing a control and evaluation meeting. Reiterating government’s view that the forces have a grasp of the situation, Lieutenant General Rene Claude Meka highlighted recent strides made by the army against separatist fighters clamouring for a separate state, Ambazonia.

These included the reopening of the Kumbo – Oku roads and the destruction of16 secessionist camps in the Ngoketungia division.

State media reports that during the session, Lieutenant General held closed door meetings with high ranking military personnel if the North West region in which he urged them to ensure discipline and professionalism within their ranks.

He also reportedly said they should handle acts of terror with tact.

A second to the North West region since the start of 2020, Rene Claude Meka’s visit happens at a time government is believed to be engaged in ceasefire talks with separatist leaders detained in the capital, Yaounde.

The war against separatist fighters has lasted almost four years and seen thousands killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in and out of the country as internally displaced persons and refugees.
